PM Modi to Visit Russia for BRICS Summit; Chinese prez Xi Jinping to Attend as Well

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to leave for Kazan, Russia, on today to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit. It is expected that PM Modi will hold bilateral meetings with invited leaders during the BRICS summit in Kazan. Chinese President Xi Jinping is also traveling to Russia to attend the summit.

This BRICS Summit is the first major gathering of the group since its expansion last year. The summit will begin on today, with the main discussions scheduled for Wednesday. Ahead of Modi’s departure, India has emphasized the importance of BRICS to the country.

PM Modi is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with counterparts from BRICS member states and other invited leaders in Kazan.

Apart from PM Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping will also be present at the summit in Russia. The BRICS group consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (which joined in 2010).

Recently, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates have also been added to the group.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted India’s significance to BRICS, stating, “India has played a crucial role in shaping the group’s efforts in areas like economic growth, sustainable development, and global governance reforms.”

The summit will officially commence on today, with the primary discussions taking place on Wednesday. Misri remarked, “We value our participation and activities within BRICS because we view it as a key expression of global multipolarity.”

He further mentioned that BRICS serves as a critical platform for addressing global challenges and contributes to shaping a fairer, more inclusive, and open international order. Leaders are also expected to adopt the ‘Kazan Declaration’, which will outline the future direction of BRICS.

In addition to PM Modi, Xi Jinping is also making the trip to Russia for the BRICS Summit. On Monday, China commented on Xi’s visit, stating that the group represents emerging economies and continues to be a positive and stable force committed to upholding multilateralism. However, when asked about a potential meeting between Xi and PM Modi, China sidestepped the question, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stating, “If anything is confirmed, we will let you know.”
