Mahakumbh Bath: A stampede occurred before the Mauni Amavasya bath at the Maha Kumbh. The crowd grew so large that people climbed over barricades, stepping over sleeping devotees. As a result, there are fears of several fatalities, although the administration has not confirmed any deaths yet.
Hundreds of people climbed over each other, and the situation worsened, leading to a stampede. Over 20 ambulances were dispatched to take the injured to hospitals, with around 20 people brought to the Mahakumbh hospital. All district hospitals have been put on high alert.
Sarojini, a woman from Belgaum, Karnataka, stated that the crowd suddenly increased at Sangam Noz, and after a pillar broke and fell, the stampede began. She mentioned that an elderly couple who had come with her may have died in the incident. Jokhu Lal from Gonda, who lives near Darzi Kuan, informed that his uncle Nankan (44) died in the stampede. He came to collect the body from the central hospital.
The stampede occurred just before the royal bath of the akharas during Mauni Amavasya, creating a stir among officials. The administration is working to restore normalcy. The incident took place at Sangam Noz, where the akharas were supposed to perform their ritualistic bath. Devotees had started gathering late at night on Monday, and the crowd grew larger once the bathing began.
Millions of devotees gathered at the Sangam bank and surrounding areas. Some bathers attempted to break the barricades set up for the akharas, leading to chaos and a stampede around 2 a.m. Those who fell during the stampede couldn’t get up.
After the stampede, many people who got separated from their families rushed to the hospital. However, no one was allowed to enter the hospital. The injured people mentioned that many had been trampled and there was no one to help them. Several belongings were scattered at the scene, and many people were separated from their families. The police and administration have urged the missing individuals to return home.”
