Manipur Riots Again: Manipur is once again engulfed in violence, with the situation spiraling out of control. Amid the escalating tensions, the National People’s Party (NPP) has withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government in the state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level meeting to review the situation and issued directives to ensure peace.
The unrest reignited following the murder of 6 people, including 3 women, on Saturday. Angered by the killings, mobs set fire to the residences of BJP legislators. With an indefinite curfew in place, the NPP has accused Chief Minister N. Biren Singh of failing to manage the deteriorating law and order situation.
Protesters targeted the homes of three BJP MLAs and a Congress legislator in Imphal Valley, setting them ablaze. Officials revealed that demonstrators also attempted to attack Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s ancestral home but were thwarted by police.
The NPP, citing worsening law and order, pulled out its support from the BJP-led government. However, the BJP retains a majority with 32 seats in the 60-member assembly, making the withdrawal unlikely to affect the government significantly. The NPP has seven legislators in the assembly.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, after canceling his election rallies in Maharashtra, chaired a review meeting on Sunday and instructed top security officials to take every necessary step to restore peace in Manipur.
The unrest intensified after the discovery of the bodies of three women and three children in Jiribam district, triggering violent protests across Imphal Valley on Saturday. This led to the imposition of an indefinite curfew. Protesters attacked the residences of three ministers and six legislators. Houses of key figures, including Public Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam in Ningthoukhong, BJP MLA Y Radheshyam in Langmeidong, BJP MLA Paonam Brojen in Wangjing Tentha, and Congress MLA Lokeshwar in Imphal East, were set on fire.
