Rahul Gandhi Citizenship: Does Rahul Gandhi Hold British Citizenship? The Allahabad High Court has sought clarification from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) regarding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship.
In an order issued on November 25, the High Court directed the central government to provide details by December 19. This directive came in response to a petition claiming that Rahul Gandhi holds British citizenship. The next hearing for the case is also scheduled for December 19.
Deputy Solicitor General S.B. Pandey, representing the central government, informed the court that the Ministry of Home Affairs has received the representation filed by the petitioner and is currently processing it.
The petitioner, S. Vignesh, alleges that Rahul Gandhi possesses British citizenship, claiming he conducted a detailed investigation into the matter. He also stated that he has reviewed confidential emails from the British government related to the issue.
The petitioner further informed the court that he had already submitted two representations to the Ministry of Home Affairs, requesting the cancellation of Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship. Following this, the court directed the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) to obtain instructions from the Ministry regarding the representation.
The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) also alleges that an email from the UK government indicated they possess records of Rahul Gandhi’s British citizenship. However, the UK government has refused to disclose specific details, citing protections under the Data Protection Act, 2018. They clarified that such personal data could only be shared if a signed consent letter from Rahul Gandhi is provided.
Additionally, the petitioner, Vignesh, has called for a CBI investigation into the matter.
